Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) awarded five communities grant funding totaling $30,500,000 to address PFAS and additional emerging contaminants in drinking water. The City of Summerville will receive a grant of $3.5 million. The $3,500,000 EC-SDC grant will fund a pilot study to treat for PFAS and upgrading the city’s drinking water plant. The legislation allows investment in the water sector that includes $50 billion to the EPA to strengthen the nation’s drinking water and wastewater systems.

More Cases Of West Nile Virus In Georgia

Data released Tuesday from theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal increased West Nile virus cases in Georgia. Six cases have been reported in the state, up from two on Aug. 21.

The new cases are concentrated in metro Atlanta, with reported infections in Fulton, DeKalb, Hall, Richmond, Cherokee, and Chatham counties. Each county has reported one case of the virus.

The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, the CDC said and tends to peak in the United States from July through October. Nationwide, 33 states have reported human cases of West Nile, totaling 289 infections, including 195 instances of neuroinvasive disease, which affects the central nervous system. Texas currently leads with the highest reported cases, standing at 41.

Three Arrested In Separate Shoplifting Incidents At Walmart In Trion

Three women were arrested on three consecutive days last week for shoplifting at the local Walmart store. According to reports from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the three separate incidents happened on August 23rd, August 24th and August 25th. All three of the shoplifting incidents involved “skip scanning” at the self-checkout lanes. Fifty-five-year-old Melinda Lively, twenty-four-year-old Kimberly Kincade and sixty-seven-year-old Nadia Belotto were all charged with theft by shoplifting and booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

The Trion Bulldogs hosted the Temple Tigers on Friday evening. Both teams were 2 – 0 coming into last night’s contest. For the second time this season, high school football in Trion was affected by lightning. Thunderstorms in the area on Friday evening delayed fans getting into Sam R. McCain Stadium. The game got underway and Temple scored in the first quarter, but by half time, the Trion Bulldogs were up 7 -3. Temple didn’t score again until the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs continued to add points to defeat the Tigers 42-15. Next week, the Trion Bulldogs will be at home again to take on Model. The Chattooga Indians had the night off last night, and will return next week to take on Mt. Zion at Home.
