I give my birds (which are wild) a choice between bird seed and fresh slices of bread. The Megapodes (Scrub Turkeys) prefer the seed, especially the sunflower seeds, the Manorinas prefer the bread and the Lorikeets as well as the co*ckatoos (Corellas and Sulphur-crested co*ckatoos) also prefer the bread. I figure that wild birds know what to eat, unlike caged birds.#birds #co*ckatoo #ornithology

Celebrating Our Feathered Friends 🦜As World Parrot Day approaches on 31 May, it's a great time to recognise the importance of parrots. These birds are not only interesting to watch but also play a key role in their ecosystems. Here are some reasons why parrots matter:🌳 Ecosystem Engineers: Parrots help spread seeds through their diet of fruits and nuts. This seed dispersal supports forest regeneration and plant diversity.🧠 Intellectual Avians: Parrots are among the most intelligent bird species. They can solve problems, use tools, and some can mimic human speech, showing their social intelligence.👯 Social Interaction Specialists: Parrots are social animals that form strong bonds and complex social structures. These interactions help them find food and protect each other from predators.🎨 Cultural Significance: Parrots appear in mythology, art, and folklore around the world, symbolising beauty, intelligence, and a connection to nature. On World Parrot Day, let's honour and protect these amazing birds, celebrating their intelligence, ecological role, and cultural importance. 🌍💚#UNIC#UNICVet#UNICHealth#UniversityOfNicosia#Nicosia#Cyprus#WorldParrotDay#Parrots#BirdLovers#WildlifeConservation#EcosystemEngineers#IntelligentBirds#SocialAnimals#CulturalHeritage#SaveParrots#LoveNature#Biodiversity#WildlifeProtection#BirdWatching#EnvironmentalAwareness#NatureLovers

#𝐟𝐑𝐈𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 - In this study, we looked at how wildlife interacts with linear features with different characteristics. Here’s a short summary of what we found:🐾 Moose, elk, deer, and bears were more likely to use linear features with human and game trails. 🌲 Bears steered clear of linear features with denser vegetation; wolves avoided those with taller veg.🦌 Moose, elk, and deer were drawn to linear features with more forage species. Bubbling bees! We’ve seen a few members on my Facebook group The Buzz on Wild Bees post bees blowing bubbles ! I captured a Lasioglossum (Homalictus) dotatum blowing bubbles too! Why are they doing this? Well this behaviour, known as “bubbling”, is performed by many bees across the world, primarily in the family Halictidae (like this bee), as well as Hylaeinae. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) and the Meliponini (our “sugarbag bees” in Aus), also do this. Bubbling involves concentrating nectar externally with their mouthparts. This is because nectar is too dilute so the reduce the water content , concentrating the nectar solutes (mainly various sugars) by bubbling .A study by Portman et al. Published in @apidologie found observations of this behavior to be taxonomically widespread, with observations of nectar concentrating behavior documented in 51 genera in six families. Nectar concentrating can have a variety of purposes, including “preparation for long-term storage in hives, modification before adding to larval provisions, removal of excess water for efficient storage in the crop, thermoregulation, and potentially for nest construction.”.Want to learn more about bees?
