directions

  • Preheat oven to 400ºF.
  • Place potatoes in a large saucepan and pour in enough water to cover potatoes. Set pan over high heat and bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium and simmer 10 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain potatoes, transfer to a large bowl and add sour cream and margarine; mash until smooth, season to taste with salt and set aside.
  • Meanwhile, heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrots and celery; cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Add turkey and cook until browned, breaking up the meat as it cooks, about 5 minutes. Add flour, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper; stir to coat. Add broth and bring to a simmer; simmer until mixture thickens, about 3 minutes.
  • Transfer turkey mixture to a 9-inch, deep-dish pie plate. Spread mashed potatoes over top and using the back of a spoon, make decorative swirls over the top. Bake until potatoes are golden, about 30 minutes. Slice into 6 pieces and serve.

  1. This did not taste like a WW recipe at ALL! My family (including young kiddos) loved it! I didn't have the rosemary alone so I used an italian blend seasoning (that had both rosemary and thyme in it.) I also used beef broth and a little skim milk added to the potatoes. I used 5 small potatoes instead of the two large! I will be making this all the time! THANK YOU!

  2. Made this for a weight watchers potluck at work...It was a hit! This tastes just like "non-weight watchers approved" Sheper's pie. We really enjoyed this dish. Taste is not compromised at all with the healthier subsitutions. Thanks for posting!

  3. Note: I just calculated the Points Plus for this recipe and it is 7...but well worth it!

  4. This is delicious. My family usually doesn't like ground turkey, and I have been asked to make it again. Great leftovers for lunch at work next day.

  1. I was so glad to find a healthy recipe to add to my collection. The only modifications I made were to use ground chicken instead of turkey and dill instead of the rosemary, since I didn't have any. It tasted great and will be made again! Thanks for posting!

  2. Excellent recipe, I definitely wanted seconds! I made a couple of changes; I added about a cup of diced mushrooms and used extra lean ground beef instead of the ground turkey. Substitutions didn't change the points when I calculated them. Will be making this again.

  3. Yum! This was fantastic. DH is defintely a fan! I made it according to the recipe the first time and made 3 small pies (there's only 2 of us after all!) The next time I made it, I made a vegetarian version with 3/4 c. dried lentils and 1 cup mushrooms instead of turkey and veg. broth. I also decided to use red skin potatoes with the skins on. It is equally good both ways!!

  4. I thought this was really quite tasty. I used ground turkey but wanted it to taste more authentic so I used beef broth instead of chicken broth. My family loved it! After reading other reviews, I also cut the rosemary and thyme in half, but I actually regretted that decision. I have found that to be a distinct flavor of Sheperd's Pie and will use the full amounts next time. I also did add a bit of seasoning blend instead of salt and pepper, which I found delightful. I did not add a full 2 cups of broth as I was wary of the warnings of "soupiness" and found that 1 1/2 cups was just right. My family agreed that this should be part of our regular rotation. Thank you!

  5. Made for Zaar Chef Alphabet Soup Game. We really enjoyed this - true comfort food at it's best. I used 94% lean ground beef instead of ground turkey and also at the suggestion of one of the other reviewers, I reduced the rosemary and thyme in half and it was perfect. This will become a regular when I need comfort food. Thanks for posting this xpensve!

FAQs

How do you keep shepherd's pie from falling apart? ›

How do you keep shepherds pie from falling apart? The eggs in the mashed potatoes help keep the pie together. You should also make sure to spread the potatoes and press down a bit.

What can I use to thicken my shepherd's pie? ›

The easiest way to thicken shepherd's pie filling is by sprinkling a few tablespoons of flour into the ground beef mixture as it cooks before adding it to the baking dish. The starch in the flour will absorb the extra liquid and create a thick gravy.

How do you keep mash from sinking in shepherds pie? ›

To stop the mash sinking into the filling, allow the meat to cool before topping with the mashed potato. Freeze in individual ovenproof dishes for an easy meal for one.

Why does my potato sink in shepherds pie? ›

Residual moisture from the potatoes will drip into the beef below as it cooks, and too much of it will cause the potatoes to eventually sink. Aside from ridding your potatoes of excess moisture before you mash them, it also helps to cool the beef down, BBC Good Food shares.

Why is flour used in shepherds pie? ›

This shepherd's pie recipe uses 2 tablespoons of flour to thicken the gravy but if you feel like the meat mixture is too watery, add in another tablespoon and stir to combine. You may also try simmering the mince mixture for longer so that the stock reduces down and thickens.

How do you thicken shepherd's pie without cornstarch? ›

Arrowroot Powder – If you're following the Paleo Diet then Arrowroot Powder is a great alternative to using cornstarch to thicken gravies and sauces.

What is the best thickener for pie filling? ›

Very often flour or cornstarch is used, but in certain instances tapioca, arrowroot and potato starch can also help achieve the desired consistency. Tapioca starch is preferable for products that will be frozen because it will not break down when thawed. We like tapioca in blueberry, cherry or peach pies.

Should I put shepherds pie in the fridge? ›

Freshly baked shepherd's pie will keep for about 3 to 5 days in the fridge; refrigerate covered with aluminum foil or plastic wrap.

How do you make mashed potatoes thick again? ›

You can use what you have on hand: Flour, cornstarch, or powdered milk are all solid options that are probably already in your pantry. Potato flour and potato starch would work as well. Stir in the thickening agent gradually, about a tablespoon at a time, until the potatoes have reached your desired consistency.

What do you drink with shepherd's pie? ›

An Argentinian Malbec, a wine known for its deep, dark fruit flavors and velvety texture, would also pair well with Shepherd's Pie. The wine's bold flavors and medium to high tannins would stand up to the hearty meat and vegetables, while its underlying notes of spice and earth would echo the dish's savory elements.

Why is shepherds pie unhealthy? ›

This ultimate comfort food can be quite unhealthy, with lots of butter in the mash and pushing up your saturated fat intake.

Why do my mashed potatoes feel like dough? ›

Use about 1 pound (0.45 kg) of potatoes per 2 pounds (0.91 kg) of gluey mashed potatoes. More often than not, gluey mashed potatoes are caused by a large amount of waxy potatoes being overworked and mashed in the cooking process.

Can shepherds pie go bad? ›

Shepherds pie will last five days in the refrigerator and two months in the freezer. It can be reheated in the oven or microwave. Shepherds pie can be stored in a Tupperware container, sealable plastic bag or an airtight, freezer safe container.

Why does my pie fall apart when I cut it? ›

The outlet suggests letting a home-baked pie cool completely before cutting into it, which will help the hot filling set up instead of remaining runny.

Why does my meat pie fall apart? ›

The pie dough is too dry!

The butter should stay firm so it doesn't soften and combine with the flour. Wondering why can't you use a spoon? The trick here is to hydrate the flour with just enough water to get the dough to stick together.

Why did my pie fall apart? ›

Too much flour = dry pie dough. Once mixed, your dough should stick together when you pinch it between your fingers. If it doesn't, you need to add more moisture. Even if you think your pie dough resembles the Sahara desert, show some restraint when adding more water.

Why did my pie filling split? ›

You cooled the pie too quickly

Not unlike a cheesecake, pumpkin pies have to be slowly cooled or else they might crack. The thermal shock of a pie going from a hot oven to the fridge can rapidly contract the egg proteins and just like overbaking, this will split the filling.
