Photo) Six-year wait brings firemen's contest prize By CARLA LEGGETT N-H Area Editor They say all good things come to those who wait. F. W. Wilkes of Huron who will be 95 October 4 agrees with that saying wholeheartedly. Wilkes waited for nearly six years to receive $25 which he won in a fireman's contest conducted by Marblehead Volunteer Fire Department, because was no address on his ticket stub, local firemen did not recognize the name and he did not know he'd won.

John Hannes sold the ticket to Wilkes in November, 1964. It was for cash prizes in connection with a fund raising event for the volunteer fire department. This past weekend Hannes was selling the same tickets for the same cause in Marine City when the signature on the ticket stub looked familiar to him. Back at Marblehead Fire Station Hannes and Fire Chief Ervin Mutach found the six-year-old signature and compared them. They matched and the prize which had never been claimed was still sealed in an envelope.

Labor Day morning Hannes and Mutach took the check for $25 to Wilkes at his cottage at Marine City. Wilkes who was fire chief at Huron for many years and was a volunteer firemen for over 60 years before retiring had a big grin and remarked, "This just goes to show you that firemen are honest." Egert, 18, Elmore. Rev. Frank Bunn to officiate. Wheat and chaff By ARCHIE KING It is as far from here to Nome, Alaska as it is from here to Paris, France and it costs just as much to make the journey. There is no such thing as the Alcan Highway; 1 the official name is the Alaska Highway.

Officials informed us that Alcan i is a nickname given by soldiers who worked on that project. The Eskimos in Alaska never lived in igloos as a permanent home. The igloo is a temporary shelter used during the hunting season. The permanent home was built of earth and half of it was below the ground level for added warmth. Present day Eskimo houses are modest wooden structures.

The natives say they keep them small in size because it is easier to heat a small house than a large one. When they are christened, Eskimos are given native names. When they enter school they adopt names of Americans whom they know or admire. I talked to an Eskimo tribe leader named Paul Green, and we saw the graves of Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln.

Eskimos keep these adopted names throughout their life, and these names are used on their graves. Rev. Lonzo Green informs us that two communities in Ohio have similar name origins. Bellefontine is French for Beautiful Fountain and Schoenbrun means Beautiful Spring in German. There are only eight Moravian churches in Ohio and there never were any more.

The Moravian Church was founded in Bohemia by John Huss shortly before Columbus discovered America. The church is very similar to other Protestant churches in its doctrine. I have been entertained by Moravian missionaries when I was in the service in Central America and found them to be very hospitable people. The Moravian churches in Ohio are all located in the Southeastern part of the state near the city of Dover, The color scheme on our mail deposit boxes has been recently changed. The boxes are now a bright blue.

They are not as colorful as the former red, white and blue ones, but the painting can be done in one operation. We understand that the postal emblem will soon be changed. The familiar pony, remniscent of the pony express, will be replaced by the American eagle. To us the pony seemed more fitting for the postal service. There must be some reason for the change.

We wonder how much it cost to make this change. The wild life preserve on Perry street is a delightful place early in the morning. There one may see ducks, heron, egrets and a few muskrats ranging for food. We are very fortunate to have this place within walking distance of the business district. Some people have been seen molesting the ducks and muskrats in the pond.

This area should be posted NO TRESPASSING. Let us protect our wild creatures. Some people advocate draining this spot. They say we have other wild life preserves not far away. There are no such areas within walking distance, where our youths can study nature.

They must be taken by automobile to the other parks. We are fortunate to have such a spot. Let us preserve it. Thanks to members of the American Legion for putting out the flags in our business district on the various holidays. Mark A.
